Characteristics of Living Things All organisms on Earth are have 6 characteristics that we can use to classify them as "living things". All living things can be broken into 6 categories, as shown in the image to the right

- Cells - Organisms are multicellular or unicellular
- Energy - They must obtain energy from their environment and food sources to survive
- Reproduce - The individual can live without this, the but species as a whole will die if there are no offspring born
- Grow & Develop - Living things must grow from infant state to an age of sexual maturity
- React to the Environment - organisms react to stimulus in a particular way
- Adaptations - Organisms have physical and behavioural traits that ensure their survival
